Positive Birth Story Melbourne | A Hypnobirthing Birth Story
A calm, informed and positive birth experience
I still find it hard to put my birth into words because it didn’t unfold exactly how I had imagined it in my head — but when I look back, what stands out most isn’t what changed… it’s how I felt throughout it.
I went into labour feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Like many women preparing for birth, I wanted to feel calm and informed, but underneath that I still carried fear and uncertainty. I wasn’t fully confident in my ability to cope with labour, even though I had done preparation through hypnobirthing education during pregnancy.
What I didn’t realise at the time was just how much that preparation would shape my experience.
Early labour at home | trusting the process
Labour started quite gradually for me. The sensations came and went in waves, and at first I wasn’t even sure if it was “real” labour or early signs. I stayed at home, tried to rest, ate small snacks, cuddle my dog, and focused on staying relaxed rather than rushing into hospital too soon.
This stage felt really important in hindsight — being in my own space allowed me to stay calm and connected to my body without external pressure.
Using hypnobirthing tools during labour
As things progressed, the sensations became stronger and more consistent. This was the point where I really started to rely on the breathing and relaxation techniques I had practised during my hypnobirthing classes with Michelle from My Hypnobirthing.
I focused on slow, steady breathing through each wave and tried to soften my body rather than resist what was happening. I remember being surprised by how much this helped me stay present rather than fearful.
My partner was also a huge support. Because we had practised together, he knew exactly how to help me stay grounded — reminding me to breathe, staying close without overwhelming me, and gently supporting me through each contraction.
Having that shared understanding made such a difference to how calm I felt.
Transition into hospital and active labour
When we arrived at hospital (eye mask and headphones on!), things intensified quite quickly. The environment felt different, and I had to really turn inward and focus.
I continued using my hypnobirthing breathing techniques and hypnosis tracks and focused on staying in the moment rather than thinking too far ahead. I also made sure to ask questions and take things step by step, which helped me feel involved and informed rather than overwhelmed.
At this point in my positive birth story, there were some decisions that needed to be made as labour progressed. While things didn’t follow a completely linear path, I always felt included in the conversation and supported to understand what was happening and why.
That sense of awareness was something I hadn’t expected to matter so much — but it truly did.
Moving through labour | staying grounded and supported
As labour continued, I moved through different positions to help me cope with the intensity — side-lying, leaning forward, and being supported by my partner at different points.
There were moments where I had to completely surrender to the experience and stop trying to control it. Instead, I focused on staying present, breathing through each wave, and trusting that each contraction was bringing me closer to meeting my baby.
Even in the most intense moments, I never felt afraid in the way I had feared I might. I felt supported, guided, and connected to what was happening.
Birth of my baby | a positive hypnobirthing birth story
Eventually, my baby was born — and I remember that moment so clearly. The shift from intensity to calm is something I will never forget.
It was a moment of disbelief, relief and overwhelming love all at once.
What stayed with me most afterwards wasn’t just the physical experience of birth, but how I felt throughout it. I didn’t feel scared or out of control. I felt present, informed and supported at every stage of the journey.
Reflections on a positive birth experience
Looking back now, I wouldn’t describe my birth as “perfect,” but I would absolutely describe it as positive.
And that’s something I didn’t fully understand before my own experience — that a positive birth story isn’t defined by how smoothly everything goes, but by how supported, informed and empowered you feel as things unfold.
I truly believe that the hypnobirthing preparation I did during pregnancy played a huge role in shaping my experience. It didn’t control the outcome, but it completely changed how I moved through it.
Instead of fear and uncertainty, I had tools, understanding and support.
And that made all the difference.
